As reported earlier, all that was remaining to secure the 2021 U.S. Open at Torrey Pines was a vote by San Diego city council. We’re pleased to report that the council has unanimously approved the proposal. We will see the 2012 U.S. Open at Torrey.
The terms of the proposal have the USGA paying $2.5 million in rent for the course and parking. This is up from $500,000 from the 2008 U.S. Open. On top of that, the city of San Diego will receive 20% of corporate hospitality sales.
There are of course many costs associated with the event, one of the bigger ones being new player and practice facilities, rumored to cost in the neighbourhood of $500k.
