The other night at the European Tour’s gala player awards dinner, Sergio Garcia was asked a few questions by the Golf Channel’s Steve Sands. Sands asked Sergio if he would welcome Tiger around for dinner one night during the upcoming U.S. Open. Sergio responded with:
‘We will have him round every night… We will serve fried chicken.’
Sergio has since apologized for his remarks in a statement issued through the European Tour:
‘I apologize for any offence that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players’ Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.’
This morning (in fact, just a few minutes ago), Tiger responded to Sergio’s comments with some interesting statements via Twitter (@TigerWoods). He said:
‘The comment that was made wasn’t silly. It was wrong, hurtful and clearly inappropriate. I’m confident that there is real regret that the remark was made. The Players ended nearly two weeks ago and it’s long past time to move on and talk about golf.’
No doubt a few more jabs at Sergio here. There’s no denying the two aren’t and will probably never be friends. Interesting to see Tiger go out of his way to respond. The world #1 must have been just a tad fired up.
