What a Sunday we had yesterday at The Memorial. Japanese phenom Hideki Matsuyama topped Kevin Na in a playoff to win his first career PGA Tour victory.
With Na already in the clubhouse at -13, Matsuyama came clutch, sticking a 7-iron to 5 feet on the 72nd hole to force a playoff. The putt was impressive, especially when you consider the number of shots Matsuyama squandered down the stretch leading to the 18th green. In fact, other leaders including Adam Scott and Bubba Watson faltered with consistency down the closing holes.
Just as par was enough to force a playoff on 18, par was again enough to win the title for Matsuyama. He sank a 10-foot par putt on the first playoff hole to put Na out of his misery, and the title in his back pocket. The smooth-swinging Matsuyama (gotta love how slow and composed his swing is, it even comes to a complete stop at the top of the swing!) got it done, and the legends were impressed.
Jack Nicklaus himself offered this comment after witnessing the win first hand:
“I just think you’ve just seen the start of what’s going to be truly one of your world’s great players over the next 10 to 15 years…”
Profound words indeed.
