The telltale signs have been there.
During the Presidents Cup earlier this month, Els was found playing a Titleist ball. During the Venetian Macau Open, he was striking a ProV1X. Last week at the CIMB Classic, it was a TaylorMade Lethal. Could Titleist and TaylorMade be courting the Big Easy?
Could be, but it’s more likely that Ernie is simply testing out new gear to wrap up the season. Players have long been known to go on testing sprees to find new equipment that fits and works with their games. This could be nothing more than Ernie trying to find a ‘sweet spot’ with new balls and *shudder* new clubs.
Whatever the case, we should know where Els lands by early 2014. If he did move away from Callaway, it would free up cash for the company to land some younger pro staff. And at Ernie’s age, his only concern should be to play the equipment that helps him shoot the lowest scores possible.
Ernie has the money. But the game? That comes and goes. The right equipment may help him find it on a consistent basis.
