Cleveland Golf has introduced some new putters to their growing lineup. These ‘Smart Square’ putters are adorned with 2 squares on the crown of the putter, much the same way Odyssey’s famed 2-ball putters featured the all-too-familiar circle/golf ball shape.
Cleveland insists that the square alignment aids atop the putter will improve your alignment. And while I can’t say for certain myself (not having tried out the putter and all), I do have to admit, it makes sense.
At address the ‘Smart Square’ alignment squares create two parallel lines that frame the ball. It helps to get lined up square to the target. But on top of that, the squares also create two perpendicular lines to demonstrate open or closed putter face position.
It’s a double-whammy of alignment goodness.
At launch, Smart Square putters will be available in three different options. There are heel and centre shafted versions available in standard lengths, and a 39-inch ‘almost belly’ option. The ‘almost belly’ is a heavier putter (the head weighs 40 grams more than standard, and drip weighs 2.5 x heavier) to create counter-balanced weighting.
So, are squares really better than circles? It’s too early to tell at this point. But I can’t wait to get my hands on one of these putters to try it out for myself.
The Cleveland Smart Square putters are available for pre-order beginning October 15, 2013. Look for them to launch in stores November 15, 2013 at a MAP of $139.99 for standard lengths and $179.99 for ‘almost belly’ length. For more information, visit www.smartsquareputter.com.
