Innovation in putter design is something we’ve seen an explosion of in the last decade. From polymer inserts to precision milling patterns to different weighting schemes, there’s been no shortage of options to help give you an edge on and around the greens.
In terms of new innovation, there have been some recent developments. One such innovation coming from a new company called Brex Golf.
A Little Bit About Brex Golf
Brex is a small golf equipment design and development firm. For years, founder Brett Burdick had worked as an electrical engineer in the field of avionics, and eventually into a design role for a small consumer electronics company. Putting his engineering and design skills to use, he was inspired to create what he calls the Half-Pipe alignment system, for which he received a US Design Patent… but he couldn’t apply himself fully to the business until the spring of 2012 due to previous business commitments. Design is at his heart, right alongside golf. So, one thing led to another, and Brex Golf was born that spring.
Upon founding Brex Golf, Brett jotted down his guiding principles:
- We will only sell golf products that are clearly unique – products that will never be confused with other manufacturers’ products.
- All products will be manufactured with the highest quality materials using precise manufacturing techniques.
- Our products will offer golfers true benefits to their game.
- Each product must represent good value to our customers.
- And, most importantly, we will operate our business honestly, truthfully and will always aim to satisfy our customers’ needs.
I can tell you first hand that having spoken with and dealt with Brett on numerous occasions, he’s a stand up guy and absolutely loves what he does.
The BG-1 Putter
Getting back to the product at hand, Brex has just announced their BG-1 putter, the first in their putter lineup that features a modular hosel design and patented alignment aid.
Once you take a look at the BG-1, you won’t mistake it for any other putter on the market.
The modular design allows any golfer to get a custom fit at home by allowing them to choose between three different hosels. The hosel change not only effects the balance point of the putter, but it drastically changes the look of the putter at address as well.
The second key feature of the BG-1 that distinguishes it from the crowd is the aforementioned Half-Pipe alignment system. As you can see in the diagram below, when you centre your eyes over the ball, the alignment aid will appear as a straight line. If you’re too far forward or back with your eye position, the line will appear curved. This makes it easy to get yourself into an optimal address position before you stroke your putt.
BG-1 Putter Specs
- The putter body is CNC milled from 303 stainless steel.
- The Half-Pipe is CNC milled from 6061 aluminum.
- All models come with a True Temper stepless shaft and white Iomic grip (black available upon request)
- Head weight: 350g
- Loft: 4 degrees
- Lie: 71 degrees
The initial feedback Brett has been getting on the BG-1 has been very positive. One such testimonial:
“I really enjoyed experimenting with your putters last week at Holston Hills Country Club. Your concept of three hosels with one head is very good, and all the hosel/head combinations have very good feel and a solid strike. I would certainly recommend that golfers try your product! Regards.”
John Wylie, PGA Professional Emeritus, Holston Hills Country Club, Knoxville, Tenn.
In the coming weeks we’ll get a chance to spend some time with the Brex Golf BG-1 Putter, but until then I encourage you to head over to Brex Golf for full details. You can also follow them on Twitter @BrexGolf.
